Familiar overdrive elements + EarthQuaker Devices unique twist + only $99 = something to boast about.
The EarthQuaker Devices Plumes Small Signal Shredder is a low to medium gain overdrive that was molded from the basis of that iconic green screamin’ machine that has become an industry staple. It’s the kind of overdrive that thrives with a good tube amp, bringing you warmth, saturation, and transparency. Inspiration from some familiar overdrive pedals combined with EarthQuakers clever twists and turns makes Plumes a force to be reckon with – especially with a price tag of $99.
Plumes uses low noise JFET OpAmps for a more precise signal with a much lower noise floor. The 9V power input is internally converted to +/- 9V to deliver more headroom and clarity that is almost 3D-like. The cutoff of the tone control has been adjusted to deliver more boomy bass on the low end without sacrificing the cutting midrange and bright top end.
Plumes also offers three different clipping options, so it’s useful with a wide variety of different gear and playing styles. Mode 1 is symmetrical, delivering the most crunch. Mode 2 is clean boost mode, eliminating the soft clipping diodes, leaving you with straight OpAmp drive. Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to that of the stock screamer, but with more output and clarity, or “transparency.”
